1: British pop singer CILLA BLACK (age 72) was discovered at The Cavern, in Liverpool, and later signed by Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein. She also hosted a TV show in the UK, Blind Date.

 

2: Montreal born pianist JACQUELINE RICHARD (age 87) performed in many concerts in the 50s to 70s. In 1984, she co-founded the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal. She is also known for resigning from the Order of Canada in 2009, in protest of the appointment of pro-choice advocate Henry Morgentaler to the order.

2: Bolivia’s JUAN CARLOS ARANDA (age 52) was a cumbia signer. His last band, Irreversible, was his most popular one. He died after an esthetical surgery.

2: Moroccan Gnawa musician, singer and guembri player MAHMOUD GUINIA (age 64) but both his parents’ families came from Mali. They are regarded as the main representatives for the style of Essaouira, the Saouiri style.

 

3: MARGOT LOYOLA PALACIOS (age 96) was a musician, folk singer and researcher of the folklore of Chile and Latin America in general. She published a large body of work dealing with musical styles, folk music and customs of all Chilean regions as well as other South American countries.

5: RAPHY LEAVITT (age 66) was a Puerto Rican composer and founder of the salsa orchestra “La Selecta”. Leavitt and La Selecta were responsible for the introduction of salsa in many countries.

 

5: FRANK GÉRALD (born Gérald Biesel, age 87) was a French songwriter. He wrote many hits in the 60s for Petula Clark, Françoise Hardy, Michel Polnareff (La poupée qui fait non), Dick Rivers, Michèle Torr and this classic, co-written with his brother-in-law Pierre Delanoé

 

7: Rapper SEAN PRICE (age 43) was a member of Heltah Skeltah, Boot Camp Clik, and Random Axe before meeting success as a solo artist.

 

13: Frenchman PIERRE JANSEN (age 85) scored music soundtracks, notably for most of Claude Chabrol’s films.

19: Senegalese drummer, composer and band leader DOUDOU N’DIAYE ROSE (age 85) was the recognized modern master of Senegal’s traditional drum, the sabar. He was one of the first musicians to bring Senegalese traditional music to the attention of the world. He performed with Josephine Baker, Miles Davis, Peter Gabriel and The Rolling Stones.

 

20: French singer LAURENT ROSSI (age 67) was the son of star Tino Rossi. In 1974, he had created the disco band Bimbo Jet with Claude Morgan, which met success with this song…

 

22: Sahrawi singer and lyricist MARIEM HASSAN (age 57) usually sang in Hassaniyya, an Arabic dialect spoken mostly in Western Sahara and Mauritania. From 1976 to 1998, she joined the musical group Shahid El Hafed Buyema, that became became Shahid El Uali. She also recorded 3 albums in solo.

 

30: Norwegian pianist NATALIA STRELCHENKO (age 38) had Russian origins. Her partner and manager, John Martin, was charged with her murder and is due to trial in February 2016. She worked from 1995 to 2000 as an accompanist and teacher at Saint Petersburg Conservatory, and was a renowned concert pianist.

 

31: JOY BEVERLY (born Joycelyn Victoria Chinery, age (age 91) was the oldest of the Beverly Sisters, the British counterpart of the Andrews Sisters, in the 40s and 50s.
