Claus Ogerman (29 April 1930 – 8 March 2016) was a German arranger, conductor, and composer best known for his work with Billie Holiday, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Frank Sinatra, and Diana Krall. He was one of the most prolific 20th century arrangers and has worked in the Top 40, Rock, Pop, Jazz, R&B, Soul, Easy listening, Broadway and Classical music fields.

 

Werner Lämmerhirt (17 March 1949 – 14 October 2016) was a German singer-songwriter and guitarist in the contemporary folk music style. He sang and wrote in both German and English, in a recording career that spanned more than three decades.

Biser Kirov (4 September 1942 – 6 November 2016) was a Bulgarian pop singer and tenor, who was called in the press “the most popular Bulgarian in the USSR.” Kirov called Russia his creative homeland.

 

Eugeniusz Rudnik (28 October 1932 – 24 October 2016) was a modern Polish composer, electronics engineer and sound engineer and a pioneer of electronic and electro-acoustic music in Poland. As a composer Rudnik created almost 100 works in studios of electronic music in Warsaw, Stockholm, Cologne, Paris, Bourges, Baden-Baden, Brussels and Ghent. They were presented on different radio stations throughout Europe and in many countries.

 

Lakshmi Narayan Singh (16 October 1944 – 28 July 2016), known professionally as Lachhu Maharaj, was an Indian tabla player of Benaras gharana. Along with his professional tabla performances all over the world, he was featured in films. He was nominated for the Padma Shri, but refused to accept it. He felt the appreciation of his audience was enough of an honour.

 

Herbert Hardesty (March 3, 1925 – December 3, 2016) was an American musician who played tenor saxophone and trumpet. He is best known for his association with the New Orleans pianist Fats Domino and the producer Dave Bartholomew, beginning in 1948.

 

Henry McCullough (21 July 1943 – 14 June 2016) was a Northern Irish guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was best known for his work as a member of Spooky Tooth, The Grease Band, and Wings. He also performed and recorded as a solo artist and session musician. With Joe Cocker he toured the U.S. and performed at the Woodstock Festival. In 1971 Paul McCartney asked McCullough to join his new band, Wings.

 

Howard Cable (December 15, 1920 – March 30, 2016) was a conductor, arranger, music director, composer, and radio and television producer. He was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Cable composed and arranged the original theme for the Hockey Night in Canada television broadcast, The Saturday Game which opened the broadcast from 1952 until 1968. His arrangement of Dolores Claman’s “The Hockey Theme”, which replaced his own composition in 1968, is the standard version, has been called “Canada’s Second National Anthem”.

 

Rob Wasserman (April 1, 1952 – June 29, 2016) was an American composer and bass player. A Grammy Award and NEA grant winner, he played and recorded with a wide variety of musicians including Bruce Cockburn, Elvis Costello, Ani di Franco, Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Rickie Lee Jones, Van Morrison, Aaron Neville, Lou Reed. His 1983 album, Solo won Downbeat Magazine’s Record of the Year award.

 

Abdul Gafur Hali (also Gafur Hali Maizbhanderi; 6 August 1929 – 21 December 2016) was a Bangladeshi folk lyricist, composer and singer. He was the first folk play author to use the local language of Chittagong. His works are done mainly in his native language of Chittagong.

 

Ahuva Ozeri (March 30, 1948 – December 13, 2016) was an Israeli singer, songwriter and composer. She released 20 albums over her four-decade career. According to The Times of Israel, she was “a pioneer of Israeli music”. She played the Bulbul tarang, an Indian musical instrument she learned from Ravi Shankar.
