Montreal-born musician Debbie Tebbs produced a few months ago a pretty cool album with catchy electro pop songs (like Up!) with a little help from friends like Misteur Valaire…. There is a lot of energy in her music. Tebbs uses a few tricks from Daft Punk, like the robotic voice on Run Debbie Run, but it’s all good: we feel the groove, we want to dance. On other occasions, her music and signing reminds me of Misstress Barbara’s songs (not the DJ sets). Straight Lines smells like 80s all over again, so do the keyboards on Vow. Unfortunately, it’s not all the songs on “Up!” that are unforgettable. A few also suffer from Tebbs’ accent in English. Here she is with Misteur Valaire’s dudes on the title track. A pretty catchy tune! But overall, it’s a good album – her fifth already – for people who like danceable pop that isn’t too loud nor too repetitive. The spleen that floats on most songs makes it more interesting than pure plain electro pop. In 2012, her raunchy clip for the new wave 80s song Turbo Love made some heads turn. That year, Tebbs changed her musical angle and started to write her own songs, in addition to her DJ and music producer works. DEBBIE TEBBS Up!
