Talented Southern singer songwriter and guitarist ZZ Ward is back with a 4-song EP in which she shows a more danceable angle of her music. Her first album, the excellent “Til The Casket Drops”, featured her songwriting skills with strong folk rock songs that hit the right spot, with energy and grit.

The grit is still noticeable on her four new songs, but the end product sounds closer to what Gin Wigmore and Adele do than the Melissa Etheridge-style she had developed in 2012. The blues let some room to funkier sounds and tambourine beats that targets a bit more the folks who want to dance. Love 3X is a strong number, on which we easily recognize the typical Southern accent of this pretty blonde musician. Rescue is a slower song but it still contains a lot of character.

 

Her image in 2015 is way sexier than it was, on the first album. Her Facebook posts have fewer guitars on more legs! This is a radical change in her style, which shows in her music and attitude.

Her voice is less unique, more mainstream, which removes part of what made ZZ Ward so special in the first place. To me, these types of artists need to be left untamed, unformatted, to stay unique and special. Success and mass audience may take a little more time to get to her, but they will be there for a long time if she sticks to the music she loves. My 2 cents.
