Rare are the bands that have genuine fun screaming repetitively “Dalai lama banana marijuana” all through a song. Even rarer are bands that would open their album with that song! Usually, it’s one that closes the album, or placed with the extra tracks. But no. Brisbane-based punk band Dune Rats completely assume their preferences and favorite topics. Later, on Good Seeds, they insist on “we don’t want the TV anymore”, on a punchy song, while they get even more furious on Dr Dr where their sonic approach mixes garage rock with pure punk. The Ramones, The Stooges and The Gruesomes (if they knew them – probably not…) have to be major influences. Dune Rats leaders aren’t your typical fried-brain punks. They actually write very catchy songs on their first album. Great melodies, with cool vocal harmonics (Drugs, Pogo), basslines that sound like Nirvana’s (When You’re Around) and great arrangements that hit the perfect (punk) mode: punchy, efficient, simple (the fun Superman). All these ingredients make their music powerful. At volume 11, greatness appears. Dune Rats will infuse loads of energy in your day. Australians Danny Beusa (guitar, vocals), BC Michaels (drums, vocals) and Brett Jansch (bass, vocals) have released three EP and a few singles before this first album, on their own label. Resistance is futile. Join the movement.
