GURR – Gurr Power Nicolas Pelletier 2016/10/30 Albums (English), Genres (English) This two-female band from Berlin is a lot of fun to listen to. Andreya Casablanca and Laura Lee Jenkins create a very dynamic pop punk rock where influences from Sleater-Kinney, Throwing Muses and The Breeders can be felt here and there. Every song on their first album is very alive, punchy and still very melodic. “In My Head” is the kind of album that regroups a bunch of cool, short and fun songs that can easily be thrown into a mix, in a bar, or in a venue before a show starts, to get things heated up . Free ends up with a quasi-punk feel that The Ramones would have been proud of. The 11 songs on this album add up to 29 minutes of music. This gives you an idea how short (and sweet) Gurr songs are. On Moby Dick, Jenkins leaves the drums and the two electric guitarists follow an early Cure inspired pattern. On the next song, Walnuss, it’s another style of Cure guitar that we can recognize while the drummer keeps an offbeat rhythm. Klartraum is the punkiest of all 11 tracks, somehow soften by the female back vocals. In My Head by Gurr One can only imagine these two girls get even more energy out of their live performances, as the studio seems to somehow restrain them into a square format. There is a bit of pressure in here that, I’m sure, bursts out on stage! Check here for full concert schedule. They have planned dates in Germany, Switzerland, France and the UK in November and December. On stage, Florian from the band Snøffeltøffs takes bass duties so the Andreya, the brunette guitarist and Laura, the blonde drummer (which also can play guitar) have more power. “In My Head” is the first full album by Gurr. It came out on October 14th. They had released singles on their bandcamp page since 2012. Keep an eye out for Gurr!
