There has been a trend in the last few years of strong-minded heavy-guitar female musicians that have gathered respect for both their playing and rock attitude. PJ Harvey, St. Vincent, and Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney, and later Courtney Barnett and Jenn Wasner from the excellent Wye Oak duo. To this list, we can now add Montreal-based musician Laura Sauvage. She’s the latest chick with strong guitar and song-writing abilities. Sauvage – real name Vivianne Roy – comes from a small town in New Brunswick. She’s one of the three talented singer-songwriters who formed Les Hay Babies (with Katrine Noël and Julie Aubé). Their album “My Homesick Heart” reached many ears in 2013. Songs like White Trash Theatre School are immediately recognizable with efficient melodies and “South Park” attitude. Sauvage’s voice is filled with both vulnerability and confidence (Nothing to Something and Vice Versa). She takes centre stage and nails it. She decides to handle No Direction Home on her own simply with her electric guitar and four chords and really does something special out of it. The last part of the song, where she sings through distortion really sounds like some of PJ Harvey’s early work. So does Fucker (Stole My Phone) which brings back the grunge feeling we had with Nirvana and Harvey in the early 90s. Her music on her first full-length album isn’t very original: we’ve heard that type of raw rock many times in the hands of Sleater-Kinney, the Deal sisters, Tanya Donelly and many others. But hey, these are all great musicians that we can’t get enough of, so it’s all good! She is surrounded with veteran Dany Placard, co-producer and bassist, the quiet force Mathieu Vezio on the drums and percussion, the versatile Ben Bouchard on the keyboards and on mixing, and the guitar hero Olivier Langevin. Welcome to the club Laura Sauvage, you’re extraordinormal indeed. Catch Laura Sauvage in Rosemère on May 5th, Valleyfield the 6th, Trois-Rivières the 7th and in Moncton on June 4th.
