Screaming Females is fronted by a female singer. Marissa Paternoster doesn’t scream all the time, but she sure gets her voice heard. The New Jersey based band produce a bouncy but gritty grunge rock that takes its roots way back to Nirvana, Alice In Chains, L7 in the mid-90s. Powerful but catchy songs like Empty Head will no doubt make any listener want to get up and jump around, while Ripe has a harder edge with blazing guitars, courtesy of Paternoster and bassman King Mike. The beautiful in all this is that melodies are great! Screaming Female songs all have something fascinating about them. Visibly, the trio are more comfortable when they crank the volume up, but smoother songs like Wishing Well are ok. A whole album of ballads wouldn’t do it, but a song here and there to catch our breath is fine. There aren’t a lot of occasions to stay calm and amorphous on “Rose Mountain”, the band’s 6th record in their 10 year-career. It is pretty upbeat all the way to the end, with punchy moments that will make you jump and shout (Burning Car). This album is very well balanced, made by skillful musicians and shows the great long-term potential this band has. All their albums have been released on Don Giovanni Records, an independent record label specialized in punk rock from New Jersey.
