Angela Desveaux signs beautifully. We don’t get to hear her enough. It has been seven years since this small format blonde Montrealer has released an album, and I miss her music. Her music is carefully crafted. The kind of folk pop that stands time, that you can sing along as you discover it. Angela Desveaux’s art stands besides Tanya Donelly’s or Aimee Mann’s. She’s a strong songwriter that touches souls, simply because her songs come from the heart. Because, yes, “The Mighty Ship” is one album of heartbroken stories. Worried Mind and Shape You are songs of difficult relationships. “Was I a fool to make you mine…” she asks herself on The Way You Stay. “Is it time to say goodbye?” she proposes at the end of that song. So no, this isn’t a happy album, but it still is very beautiful. Angela Desveaux’s voice embodies so much emotion. Despair. Unanswered questions. This album came out back in 2008 and is still very relevant almost 10 years later. Her voice still resonates through the air, through the subtle drums (Worried Mind) and electric guitars. Musically, Desveaux and her musicians work their way with soft country style (Joining Another), indie rock grit (Shape You) and pure folk angles. In all cases, her voice comes right through the speakers deep into the listener’s ears, reaching suffering souls and broken hearts directly. (Photo by Caroline Desilets) In the French Quebec music world, a songwriter called Salomé Leclerc has the same beautiful spleen in her voice. The same sensibility. The same broken heart stories. Her band, The Mighty Ship, consists in guitarist Mike Feuerstack (Snailhouse, Wooden Stars), bassist Eric Digras and drummer Gilles Castilloux. Angela was born in Montreal but grew up in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She came back to Montreal in the early 2000 and met Howard Bilerman (producer and drummer for Arcade Fire) who recorded her debut album “Wandering Eyes” in 2006. On her website, the last update mentioned that her partner and herself were investing into their own business, a frame shop called Frame & Canvas. “It’s a new headspace, a new experience which I think will be perfect for a new album.” Let’s hope we’re greeted by new music from Angela Desveaux soon!
