For all those who love spleen in their music, in the likes of Travis, early Coldplay or Real Estate, the soft indie pop rock of San Francisco band Fine Points is a must. Airy vocals by Matt Holliman and Evan Reiss – both members of Sleepy Sun, lead the way, bringing some appreciated smoothness in this rugged world. The guitars on Astral Season make their music catchy but somehow ambient. My best souvenirs of late 90s soft indie rock à la Travis come to mind while listening to Fine Points’s first album, entitled “Hover”. It came out on Dine Alone Records, on July 17. None of the 7 songs on this half-hour opus stand out as a major single but all of them are quite good. It’s a consistent, comfortable mood built for our listening pleasure (Just Like That). “Hover” was recorded in Oakland, at New Telos, an old storefront church turned into a studio. Fine Point’s music is relaxing and interesting (The Painted Fox). Not the type that will change the world, but certainly can change your day. Very enjoyable. Ideal for summer nights.
