Allan Barnes (September 27, 1949 – July 25, 2016) was an American jazz musician, based in Detroit for the majority of his career. Barnes traveled the world with Donald Byrd and The Blackbyrds. The band’s first album went gold with Barnes writing two of the songs: “Summer Love” and “The Blackbirds Theme”.

 

Hiroko Nakamura (July 25, 1944 – July 26, 2016) was a Japanese pianist. In 1959, whilst a student at Chutobu Junior High School,[2] she won first prize at the National Music Competition of Japan at age 15. Nakamura was a juror at many major piano competitions, including the Chopin in Poland, the Tchaikovsky in Russia, the Arthur Rubinstein in Israel, the Busoni in Italy and so on.

 

Harry Rabinowitz MBE (26 March 1916 – 22 June 2016) was a British conductor and composer of film and television music. He was conductor of the BBC Revue Orchestra (1953–60), music director for BBC Television Light Entertainment (1960–68), and head of music for London Weekend Television (1968–77). He conducted at the Hollywood Bowl (1983-84) and the Boston Pops Orchestra (1985-92). Rabinowitz conducted the film scores for numerous films including Chariots of Fire (1981), Return to Oz (1985), The English Patient (1996), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), and Cold Mountain (2003).

 

Amjad Sabri (23 December 1976 – 22 June 2016) was a Pakistani singer and a proponent of the Sufi Muslim tradition. Son of Ghulam Farid Sabri of the Sabri Brothers, he emerged as one of South Asia’s most prominent qawwali singers, often reciting poems written by his father and uncle. He was shot dead in Karachi in a targeted killing claimed by a splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban.

 

Brian Asawa (October 1, 1966 – April 18, 2016) was a Japanese American opera singer who sang as a countertenor. About Asawa, Opera News stated: “In his prime, Asawa was an electric performer, his fearless performing style supported by a voice of arresting beauty and expressivity.” Asawa not only performed in opera, but was interested in expanding the art song literature for countertenor, supporting living composers by commissioning, performing, and recording works by them. Perhaps best known is the song cycle “Encountertenor”.

 

Edoardo Müller (June 16, 1938, Treiste – June 24, 2016, Milan) was an Italian conductor who was chiefly recognized for his interpretations of bel canto operas. A frequent guest conductor with opera houses internationally, he had a lengthy association with the San Diego Opera which spanned 31 years. He was also an accomplished pianist who accompanied several notable singers in recitals and concerts.

 

“Bernie” Worrell, Jr. (April 19, 1944 – June 24, 2016) was an American keyboardist and composer best known as a founding member of Parliament-Funkadelic and for his work with Talking Heads.

 

Don Friedman (May 4, 1935 – June 30, 2016) was an American jazz pianist. On the West Coast, Friedman performed with Dexter Gordon, Chet Baker, Buddy DeFranco, and Ornette Coleman, among others, before moving to New York.

 

Guy Woolfenden OBE (12 July 1937 – 15 April 2016) was an English composer and conductor. Woolfenden composed many pieces for wind bands, chamber ensembles and orchestral works, many of which have been recorded. He composed around 150 scores for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

 

Inocente Carreño (28 December 1919 – 29 June 2016) was a Venezuelan composer and academic. He won the Venezuelan National Prize for Music in 1989.

 

Veena Sahasrabuddhe (14 September 1948 – 29 June 2016) was a leading Indian vocalist and composer of Hindustani classical music. Her singing style had its roots in Gwalior gharana, but it also borrowed from Jaipur and Kirana gharanas. Veena was known as a singer of khyal and bhajan.

 

Malik Izaak Taylor (November 20, 1970 – March 22, 2016), known professionally as Phife Dawg (or simply Phife), was an American rapper and a member of the group A Tribe Called Quest with high school classmates Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. In addition to being a member of the pioneering hip hop group, rapping about social and political issues, Phife performed in songs with other artists.
