Long John Hunter (July 13, 1931 – January 4, 2016), was an American Texas blues and electric blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. He released seven albums in his own name, and in his later years found critical acknowledgement outside of his homeland. Hunter’s best known tracks are “El Paso Rock” and “Alligators Around My Door”.

 

Gilberto Mendes (13 October 1922 – 1 January 2016) was a Brazilian composer. In the 1960s he studied in Darmstadt under Pierre Boulez, Henri Pousseur, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Mendes’s compositions include cantatas, motets, orchestral music, incidental music, solo and chamber pieces, and some avant-garde works.

Mark Barnes (1970 – 1 January 2016) known professionally as Mark B, was a British hip-hop record producer. He was most active in the 1990s and early 2000s, associating with Task Force and Blade on many of his records. He was a DJ for Jazz Fudge Recordings for much of his career. Mark B first signed with Jazz Fudge in 1995. He produced some tracks for DJ Vadim’s U.S.S.R. Repertoire.

 

Lead guitarist, primary songwriter, keyboardist and founding member of The Architects, Tom Searle, 28, died from skin cancer, on August 20. Architects are a British metalcore band from Brighton, England who have released seven studio albums.

 

Alphonse Mouzon (November 21, 1948 – December 25, 2016) was an American jazz fusion drummer and the owner of Tenacious Records, a label that primarily releases Mouzon’s recordings. He was a composer, arranger, producer and actor. He gained popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Mouzon performed with many prominent jazz-fusion musicians. In 1991, he performed with Miles Davis on the movie soundtrack album entitled “Dingo”.

Carlos Averhoff (December 6, 1947— December 22, 2016) was a Cuban jazz musician primarily known for playing tenor saxophone. He has been called “Carlos Averhoff ‘Sax'”.

Hernan Gamboa (June 18, 1946 – January 10, 2016) was a Venezuelan musician, composer and singer.

Theodosius Kaskamanidis (September 24, 1971 – November 17, 2016), better known as “Saki Kaskas” or “Captain Ginger”, was a Greek video game music composer, best known for his soundtracks in the Need for Speed series.

Jimmie Haskell (November 7, 1936 – February 4, 2016) was an American composer and arranger for a variety of popular singers (Ricky Nelson, The Grass Roots, Blondie) and motion pictures

Joey Feek (September 9, 1975 – March 4, 2016) was an American country music singer and songwriter. From 2008 to 2016, the duo Joey + Rory comprised Joey and her husband, Rory Lee Feek. The duo released eight albums overall and charted a Top 30 Hot Country Songs hit with “Cheater, Cheater”.

 

Carlton Kitto (c. 1942 – 28 November 2016) was a Bebop jazz guitarist from Kolkata, India. Kitto had the distinction of playing along with other legendary jazz musicians such as Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, David Leibman, Larry Coryell, Chico Freeman and Charlie Byrd.
