Dave Swarbrick (5 April 1941 – 3 June 2016) was an English folk musician and singer-songwriter. He has been described by Ashley Hutchings as ‘the most influential [British] fiddle player bar none’ and his style has been copied or developed by almost every British and many world folk violin players who have followed him. He was one of the most highly regarded musicians produced by the second British folk revival, contributing to some of the most important groups and projects of the 1960s, and he became a much sought-after session musician.
His work for the group Fairport Convention from 1969 has been credited with leading them to produce their seminal album Liege & Lief (1969) which initiated the electric folk movement.

 

Phyllis Curtin (December 3, 1921 – June 5, 2016) was an American classical soprano who had an active career in operas and concerts from the early 1950s through the 1980s. She was known for her creation of new roles such as the title role in the Carlisle Floyd opera Susannah, Catherine Earnshaw in Floyd’s Wuthering Heights, and in other works by this composer.

Balwant Rai Bhatt (23 September 1921 – 2 May 2016) was a noted Indian composer and musician of Hindustani vocal music. He was also known as Bhavrang. Apart from being an educator, he was known as an exceptionally talented composer. He was considered a complete Vaggeyakaar, one who composes both Vak or the word (couplets, poems) and the Geya (literally translated to singable) or the melody. He has a penchant for layakari, and many of his compositions incorporate intricate laya (tempo) patterns.

 

Ernesto Gauna (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 29 November 1950 – 1 November 2016, Buenos Aires), known professionally as Pocho La Pantera, was an Argentine master of ceremonies, actor, singer of Argentine cumbia, and author of successes such as El hijo de Cuca (1990), Me dicen la pantera (1991) and El paso de la fiesta (2016).

 

Gabriele Sima (25 February 1955 – 27 April 2016) was an Austrian opera singer who had an active international performance career since 1979. Particularly known for her appearances at the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna State Opera, and the Zurich Opera, she has performed in roles associated with both the soprano and mezzo-soprano repertoires.

 

Patrice Munsel (born Patrice Beverly Munsil; May 14, 1925 – August 4, 2016) was an American coloratura soprano. Nicknamed “Princess Pat”, she was the youngest singer to ever star at the Metropolitan Opera. Perhaps best known for the role of Adele in Die Fledermaus, she performed 225 times at the Metropolitan Opera. Sir Rudolf Bing called her a “superb soubrette” and implied that she was the world’s best.
