What a great stoner rock album “Golem” is! The LA based band Wand has the ability to create slow, thick and heavy stoner rock on one song (like the opener Unexplored Map) and then throw an energic song that punches you in the face like a heavy-weight boxer would (the excellent Self Hypnosis in 3 Days). This band can do it all.

Much more talented with finding catchy melodies that the average hardcore or stoner band, Wand can count in Cory Hanson’s dreamy vocals that help their heavy songs take off to new heights. Never does he shout like hardcore singers, never does he mumbles like indie rock frontmen. Hanson flies 8 miles high, especially on the psychic rocker Reaper Invert.

You can tell Wand’s talent as band doesn’t stop with sound when you hear a melodic acoustic song like Melted Rope. Cool and mellow and by no means cheesy. This band should be as big as Tame Impala.

“Golem” is the 2nd album of the band. The Los Angeles band had released “Ganglion Reef” last year, on Drag City Records.
