The electro pop band Hot Chip is back with its catchy – almost disco-esque – beats that made them famous in recent years with hits like Ready For The Floor, Over and Over (2008), One Life Stand (2010)… The London-based five piece band visibly has a blast making their fans dance… in an intelligent way. Hot Chip don’t make cheap music. They have the ability to create infectious grooves that grow on you, like in Huarache Lights, right from the start, which is their latest album first single. The type of songs that are half-catchy the first time you listen to them, but that you just can’t get enough of after 3 or 4 you hit the play button. Hot Chip has the funk. These guys can right great melodies, like Started Right, and funky intros, like Easy to Get, that are destined to become a dance floor favorites, perfect fits in a chill sequence, before the party lifts with well-known singles. Hot Chip has also gained a lot of depth in their sound through the years, it can be appreciated when going through their main hits in this playlist. Hot Chip can also go too deep into the cheezy 80s, losing their edge (Love is the Future). It’s a trap that many indie pop bands fall into. Think of Chromeo. This seems to happen when the main singer tries to sound sensible (Cry For You). Then, the cool melodies shift into purple teenage emotions that really don’t fit with the rest of the album. Another thing that isn’t too good with many songs on “Why Make Sense?” is the predictable format of the songs. The refrains and verses are repeated exactly the same way we heard them 45 seconds ago. It sometimes sounds like blocks that are simply placed one after the other. White Wine and Fried Chicken is a good example of this type of boring structure. Overall, “Why Make Sense?” includes half cool funky grooves and half cheesy moments. This contrast sometimes happens in one single song, which can get annoying. But in quality moments like Need You Now, they are very strong, mixing love spleen with cool beats. “Why Make Sense?” is the 6th album of the band in their 15 year career together. They were nominated for a Grammy Award, long-listed for a Mercury Prize while clips for Over and Over and One Pure Thought were highlighted as best videos the year they came out, by NME and Allmusic.com.
