1: Traditional folk songwriter JEAN RITCHIE (age 92) was an inspiration for Bob Dylan and his contemporaries.

1: Taiwanese actor and Comic Boyz boyband member AN JUN CAN (born Huang Yi-cheng, age 31) better known as SHONE AN, died of a liver cancer.

9: German easy music composer JAMES LAST (born Hans Last, age 86) was initially a bassist that turned into a “happy music” composer that sold over 200 million albums worldwide, mainly in the late 60s and 70s.

11: Jazz legend ORNETTE COLEMAN (age 85) died from cardiac arrest. The alto saxophonist marked jazz music since 1960 with his experimental style.

11: Country singer RANDY HOWARD (age 65) was killed in a gunfight with a bounty hunter, who was about to take him into custody after a missed court appearance.

11: Country music singer and TV and radio host JIM ED BROWN (age 81) started his career in the 50s with his two sisters. He is also known as the voice of Grand Ole Opry radio’s Country Music Greats Radio Show.

13: Rapper MC SUPREME (real name Dewayne Coleman, age 49) was killed when a truck hit his parked car.

15: Blues and gospel singer and songwriter MIGHTY SAM McCLAIN (age 72) was born in Louisiana and started at age 15. Success found him when he relocated in New Orleans in the early 90s. He also was involved in helping the homeless.

17: Born in Shanghai in 1914, CHANG CH’UNG-HO (age 101) was a poet, calligrapher and Kunqu opera singer. She was hailed “the last talented woman of the Republic of China”.

18: FRANK FERRARI (age 52) was a French baritone enjoying an international career.

19: Blues guitarist, pianist and singer WENDELL HOLMES (age 71) was part of The Holmes Brothers and played with Van Morrison, Peter Gabriel, and Willie Nelson, to name a few. Here he is in 2013 with pop singer Joan Osborne.

22: Composer JAMES HORNER (age 61) died in a plane crash in California. He scored the music for famous movies like Field of Dreams, Braveheart, and Titanic. He wrote this major hit.

22: American violist JOSEPH DE PASQUALE (age 95) was the principal violist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the 50s and 60s. He raised a whole generation of prominent violists.

23: MARUJITA DIAZ (age 83) was a very popular Spanish actress. She played and sang in many musicals in the 1950s.

23: THÉ LAU (born Matheus Lau, age 62) was a Dutch pop singer, who was the lead singer of the band The Scene from 1979 to 2003.

25: Guitarist and composer NARMINE DUCAP (age 74) was a specialist of his native island’s music tradition. He played “séga”, popular music in Reunion Island.

28: Yes bassist and founder CHRIS SQUIRE died of leukemia (age 67). He was the only band member to have played on all Yes albums. He co-wrote many of the major hits of the band.

29: Session drummer BRUCE ROWLAND (age 74) played for Fairport Convention, the Grease band and Joe Cocker. He played at Woodstock with the Englishman.

30: French organist, singer and pianist EDDY LOUISS (age 74) started in Paris in the early 60s with Double Six. He went on to play with jazz greats Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz and Michel Petrucciani.
