New Release from Polaris Prize, TORONTO – Monday May 15th, 2017 – The Polaris Music Prize is going to London, England. More specifically, 2014 Polaris Prize winner Tanya Tagaq, 2016 Short Listers PUP and 2016 Long List nominees Daniel Caesar and Safia Nolin will be going to London to perform at historic Trafalgar Square on Saturday, July 1 as part of a special Canada Day celebration in partnership with the High Commission of Canada in the United Kingdom. The live performances will cap off a day of activities, food and fun in the very heart of the U.K.’s capital. It is open to the public and free. “We were honoured to be asked to curate the musical performances for Canada Day in Trafalgar Square this year. Though this lineup is only a partial representation of the vastness of music brilliance represented by our history of nominees, we hope it successfully projects four very different but vital versions of the Canadian sound,” commented Steve Jordan, Polaris Founder and Executive Director. As documented on the 2016 Polaris Short List-nominated album The Dream Is Over, due to health issues in the band their musical journey could end at any moment. Considering PUP also made the 2014 Polaris Long List with their self-titled debut album, even if they burn out there’s little chance of their musical legacy fading away. Tanya Tagaq Hailing from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut in Canada’s far north, Tanya Tagaq’s avant-garde reimagining of traditional Inuit throat singing is spellbinding. A past Polaris Music Prize winner in 2014 for her album Animism, Tagaq has collaborated with the likes of Björk, Kronos Quartet and Mike Patton. Daniel Caesar A standard-bearer for the post-Drake, post-Weeknd Toronto music scene, Daniel Caesar has wooed both contemporary and classic R&B/soul fans alike with his signature single “Get You.” Caesar’s Pilgrim’s Paradise album made the Polaris Long List in 2016. Safia Nolin A funny thing happened when Quebec City-born outsider folk singer Safia Nolin released her debut album, Limoilou. It turns out there were a lot of people who identified with Nolin’s intensely personal songs, earning her a SOCAN Songwriting Prize for the song “Igloo” and a 2016 Polaris Long List nomination.
