(English News Release)

CKRK-FM K103 Kahnawake Radio is proud to announce that Friday, July 11th that has been set to begin broadcasting from its brand-new facility. The building, located on the Old Malone Highway across from the former Bedard Quarry, has been undergoing construction since the official groundbreaking ceremony on September 20 of last year. “This is an exciting time for K103 and for the community as a whole,” said K103 Board Chairman Daryl Leclaire.

“After 33 years of operation from a cramped, obsolete facility that was never meant to house anything like a radio station, we’re moving to our new home. It’s much more user-friendly and we’ll finally have access for those with special needs. It’s been a lot of work but it is well worth the effort.”

Jim Hum, who was the first person on the air for the 1981 launch of CKRK-FM, will also be the last person to broadcast from the historic Studio A ‘overlooking the mighty St. Lawrence River’ from 10am to 12 noon. Mr. Hum, who served as the Program Director, engineer and all-around go-to guy during those formative years.

A ceremony will be held to inaugurate the new building, with a special broadcast from 12 noon to 4pm and an open house as part of the festivities. Adjustments to programming are also expected to be announced shortly. “We’re a community station, as we always have been,” said Station Manager Cheryl Deer. “That’s the main reason we want the community to stop by – it’s theirs as much as it is ours!”

“We’d like to send a special invitation for any and all former staff and board members to visit on that first day,” Deer added. “They’re all part of the history of K103 and we should never forget that.”

The new building, which will be shared by the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake’s Language and Cultural Training Center, is being funded through a cooperative effort by Quebec’s Aboriginal Initiatives Fund, Tewatohnhi’saktha and the MCK. Additionally, K103 held a radiothon last fall that raised approximately $75,000 to go towards new studio equipment, computers and office systems.
