Brian Borcherdt is a genius. He has all the skills. This guy can get pure melodic gems out of lo-fi garage rock. Like Cobain could. Like Corgan could. He considers guitar like Neil Young does. He can play acoustic beauties (Low Humming) or trash it with distortion (Cut Them Free). On his 15th album (if we count all he did with bands Burnt Black, Holy Fuck, By Divine Right, Trephines and in solo), “Total Dust”, Borcherdt is as strong as Grizzly Bear and subtle as Jose Gonzalez. Yet, he isn’t as known as these (great) indie rock musicians. That will need to change. “Total Dust” is an intense album on which Borcherdt often plays alone, still providing chaos with his electric guitar (Into the Atmosphere) around the beautiful melodies he sings. On Property Lines, the best song of the album, his voice just gets through everything, sharp-eyed, as his electric guitar nails this one with punch. Drummer Leon Taheny adds in some muscle to make this song a great post-grunge track of the 2010s decade. Songs are in their purest form, always sung on a mic that’s full of reverb. Borcherdt’s voice sounds like it comes from deep inside a cave, or an abandoned factory. It sounds far away, dirty, and it’s beautiful!
